Polychrome Sculpture

El Nino de Jesus

48 x 24 x 34 inches

Nineteenth Century

Condition Before Treatment

The sculpture exhibited structural losses to the fingers and to the base. Some of the fingers had been crudely repaired. The wooden cross was broken off from the base of the sculpture and exhibited serious paint loss. The sculpture had been heavily over painted and the original gold leaf trim on the robe as well as the cross and base were covered in gold colored paint. This paint was heavily tarnished. The sculpture demonstrated areas of cleavage in the paint and gesso layers and was coated with layers of grime and dust.

Treatment

The areas of insecurity and cleavage in the paint and gesso layers were stabilized using appropriate adhesives. The extensive over paint was removed as safely possible using mild solvents or mechanically removed using scalpels. The crudely repaired fingers on the Christ figure were removed until only the original material remained.

New fingers were shaped to match the original design and losses in the paint and gesso layers were filled. Losses in design were in painted and re-gilded to match the original. The cross was reattached to the reverse of the base.
